How to Make a Great Definition Video
Decide what to say
1
Speak authentically about what play means to you, but remember that most people who watch this don’t know you! Add value for viewers by educating, entertaining, or inspiring them.
Most people decide whether or not to watch a short clip within its first 10 seconds. Start strong with a compelling definition, hook, question, or statement that leaves viewers wanting more.
Here’s a suggested format you could follow:
Open with your definition or attention-grabber.
Share a sentence or two about who you are. Mention key identities that shape your definition.
Expand on your definition with examples from your life, or with details about your favorite form of play, and how that connects to your definition.
For example: “Play is how we express our truest nature, by ourselves or in community. My name is Josh, and I’m a dad, engineer, and musician from Boston. When I play music, it helps me connect to…”
Film vertically
2
Film your video in vertical/portrait orientation. Your video will be shared as a YouTube Short and Instagram Reel, meaning it will display full-screen on mobile devices.
Light and sound
3
Face a light source while filming, such as standing in front of a window. The light source should be in front of you for best results, not behind you. Wearing earbuds or using a microphone will improve sound quality as well!
