Upgrading Recess to Maximize the Power of Play | Phasha Spencer

Recess time at school should be carefree and fun... but it isn't always that easy. For many children, navigating social dynamics and physical activity during recess can be daunting. That's where Playworks comes in. In this interview, Michael Mirza and Phasha Spencer discuss how smart structure during recess can help kids access play in new ways, as well as develop leadership skills and healthy interpersonal boundaries. Phasha also shares her personal definition of play, which combines joy, dance, community, and moonlighting as a professional voiceover actress.

Phasha Spencer is the Executive Director of Playworks Illinois, which is part of the national Playworks organization that "helps schools and youth programs create recess and play environments where every child can join in." The company is built around play because... “play teaches us to be human. In fact, societies depend on our ability to ‘play well together.’ Through play, children discover the joy of physical activity. They learn the social and emotional skills they will use in the classroom, in the workplace, and in life.” Read more about Playworks’ philosophy of play.
